RENO | CARSON CITY | LAKE TAHOE
Insurance compliance and home hardening for wildfire country.
Did your insurance company say it will not renew your policy without upgrades? Copious Interests Inc installs the fire resistant roofing, siding, vents, and defensible space improvements insurers ask for, and gives you the documentation to prove it.
WHY IT MATTERS
Wildfire risk is changing how Tahoe and Reno homes get insured.
Insurers in Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin are looking much harder at wildfire exposure. According to Nevada Division of Insurance data reported by The Nevada Independent, about 2,700 Nevada homeowner policies were canceled or nonrenewed over wildfire risk in 2024, and more than 1,600 of them were in Washoe County.
Many homeowners now get a letter listing specific items to fix before renewal: a new roof, ember resistant vents, fire resistant siding, or cleared defensible space. We complete that list correctly, the first time, and give you the photos and paperwork your insurer needs.
UPGRADES WE INSTALL
The home hardening upgrades insurers ask for most
Every insurer and every property is different. These are the improvements that show up most often on renewal letters and wildfire mitigation programs in Nevada and California.
Class A Fire Rated Roofing
New roofs and reroofs using Class A rated assemblies such as asphalt shingle, metal, and concrete tile. We also replace roofs an insurer flags for age or condition.
Enclosed Eaves and Soffits
Open eaves let embers collect under the roof. We box in eaves and soffits with noncombustible or ignition resistant materials.
Fire Resistant Siding
Fiber cement, stucco, and other ignition resistant siding to replace wood siding and rotted trim, installed to local wildland urban interface code.
Decks and the 5 Foot Zone
Ignition resistant decking, 6 inches of noncombustible material at the base of exterior walls, and metal in place of wood fencing attached to the house.
Ember Resistant Vents
Attic, gable, eave, and crawl space vents fitted with noncombustible metal mesh between 1/16 and 1/8 inch, or approved ember resistant vent units.
Defensible Space and Tahoe BMPs
Our crews clear defensible space around the home and install Lake Tahoe Basin Best Management Practices (BMPs) such as drip line infiltration and driveway runoff control, plus gutter guards and dual pane tempered windows.
HOW IT WORKS
From renewal letter to approved policy
- Send us your insurer's letter or the list of required upgrades.
- We inspect the home. Our background in professional home inspection means we spot the items an underwriter will look for, including ones not on the letter yet.
- You get a written estimate organized line by line against your insurer's requirements.
- We complete the work with permits where your city or county requires them.
- You get documentation: before and after photos, materials used, and invoices to send to your insurance company.

Know your deadlines
Nevada: insurers must mail a nonrenewal notice at least 30 days before your policy expires and give the reason (NRS 687B.340).
California: including Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, the notice must arrive at least 75 days before expiration (California Insurance Code 678).
Call us the day the letter arrives. Roofing and siding crews book up fast before winter.

HELPFUL RESOURCES
Programs that can lower your wildfire risk score
- Nevada Wildfire Mitigation Incentive Program: lists discounts insurers may offer for a Class A roof, enclosed eaves, fire resistant vents and siding, and cleared zones around the home. Participation is voluntary for insurers.
- California Safer from Wildfires: requires insurers to recognize qualifying home and property mitigation with discounts.
- Free defensible space inspections are offered by several Tahoe fire districts. Check with your local district.
- Living With Fire (livingwithfire.org) publishes Lake Tahoe and Nevada defensible space guides.
Already have damage too?
If your siding, roof, or deck also has rot, storm damage, or water damage, we can repair it and harden it in one project. See our water and storm damage restoration services.
